PETSS aims to build a philosophy of excellence, leadership and professionalism amongst our students, with a focus on enhancing personal wellness (including personal, occupational, environmental, spiritual, emotional, intellectual and social wellness). The objectives of PETSS are to provide leadership development and support to students from admission up to graduation or pre-registration (for the professional degrees) in order to foster a comprehensive development of their intellectual and personal strengths.
PETSS will organize a series of leadership and student support activities in order to fulfill the objectives of the programme:
Leadership and Personal Development Programmes
The Leadership and Personal Development Programmes aim to offer opportunities that widen the horizon of our students and allow them the channels to expand their individual strengths or overcome individual weaknesses. Over the past few years, the following leadership programmes were offered for all undergraduate students of the Faculty in conjunction with different units of the University (in particular, the Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS)) and outside parties:
- Leadership and Life Skills Programme: leadership training camp (with the support of the Leadership Training Association), workshops on emotional and social competence (CEDARS)
- Dragon-LEAP Adventure Camp (Institute for Leadership and Potential Development (HK) Ltd, PolyU), Outward Bound Training Camp (Outward Bound Hong Kong)
- Mental Health First Aid Programme (Mental Health Association of Hong Kong and CEDARS)
- Community-based voluntary services
Students are encouraged to log on to the PETSS on-line system via the HKU Portal for more details and information about the Leadership and Personal Development Programmes.
Student Support and Counselling
Well-being Committee
A Well-being Committee is formed by teachers of the Faculty to provide support to students in a timely and proactive manner. The service is available on a one-on-one basis throughout the year to deal with problems such as ineffective study habits, inadequate educational experience, distraction due to nonacademic activities, unsatisfactory student-teacher relationships, underlying medical conditions and emotional difficulties. The aim is to effectively identify the causes of individual students’ problems and rectify them promptly.
The Well-being Committee consists of the following members:

Apart from individual counselling, large group counselling is arranged for new students in the orientation week, and career counselling is offered to graduating classes and medical pre-interns on both a personal and a group basis. Active support and counselling on career development is very crucial in view of the extremely competitive job market for our graduates.
Buddy Scheme
As support to new students, a Buddy Scheme has been in place under which students in senior years serve as big brothers / sisters to their fellow students in the junior years. Ways are explored by the PETSS Group to facilitate further interaction among students by organizing regular sharing sessions and social functions, and rendering support / assistance.
